An ‘after hours side project’ by Michael Mann and Kunal Sen animated at the 2008 summer camp of our non-profit client Peace it Together. They also recently uploaded a few short films made by youth participants at the camp on their Vimeo account. More information about Peace it Together’s creative peace-building program that brings together young people from Palestine, Israel, and Canada for dialogue, conflict resolution, and filmmaking, is available on their website.
She might clip around our office in high heels and a skirt, but when our Account Manager, Macartney, is away from work, she can most often be found out at the barn, covered in dirt aboard one of her horses.
Hey you! Did you know there are some items you shouldn’t throw in the garbage? Things like batteries, paint, fluorescent tubes, and CFL bulbs (when they eventually burn out). That’s because they contain hazardous wastes that can leak in landfills and contaminate nearby soils and water systems. To help accommodate one of the more common of these products, we’ve expanded our recycling to include batteries. If you’ve got batteries at home you need recycled, bring ‘em in and we’ll make sure they’re disposed of safely, while saving you a trip to the disposal plant.
Note: RECHARGABLE batteries can be dropped off at MEC, Canadian Tire, or Home Depot for safe disposal.
Since our “going green” announcement in April, we’ve been charging ahead with our slate of eco-initiatives. So far, it’s been a relatively easy transition…as long as sharing quarters with hundreds of ravenous creepy crawlers doesn’t phase you! Yep, that’s right - we’ve started vermicomposting at FCG.
The FCG Two-Wheelers hit the road for Bike to Work Week, put on by the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition. While a lot of us pedal to work on a fairly regular basis, five us decided to make a commitment – rain or shine – for the week. We mapped our routes and tracked our kilometres on the BTWW website – and figure we offset 64.7 kilograms of carbon.
This month Fleming Creative Group, Fleming Design’s parent company, celebrates 25 years in business! While most days it feels like we opened our doors only yesterday, it was back in 1983 when founder Doug Fleming first hung out his shingle as one-man, then two-man shop, ready to take on complex production jobs.
What better day than Earth Day to announce our commitment to become a more environmentally responsible, sustainable design studio. April 22, 2008 officially ushers in Fleming’s new green era.
Our decision to become more sustainable wasn’t one we undertook lightly - or quickly. We didn’t want to ride the “green wave” trend with piecemeal efforts that would fizzle after a few months. We wanted a plan we could stick to, a real strategy that would lead to long-term, sustainable change, and a corporate philosophy to back it up. So, last fall, we assembled our own “Green Team” tasked with doing exactly that.
